The original catamaran kayak backcountry trip. As soon as you step on board this vessel you’ll begin to get the feeling of a comfortable, well established tradition. When you realize that the owners cap the trip at 14 passengers on this 42’ long 24’ wide, very spacious catamaran, you begin to under- stand that quality and creature comfort is standard with Tom and Elizabeth. And they should know, they’ve been operating this wonderful excursion for a long time. You will journey 12 miles, deep into the heart of The Great White Heron National Wildlife Refuge to reach areas that few people (including locals) rarely see. The first stop is their 2 hour guided kayak tour through an endless maze of mangrove lined tidal creeks, wow! You will be thinking to yourself “I’m glad we have a guide with us”... because you know very well you could be lost for days in this jungle. The wildlife you will encounter will leave you speechless: herons of all kinds, spoonbills, ibis’, egrets, ospreys, pelicans, frigatebirds, even bald eagles. The fish and marine life will include: barracuda, lobster, crabs, conch whelk, clams and sea cucumbers, tropical fish everywhere! Your guide will actually show you how these animals function rather than just pointing them out at a distance. For those of you who are not athletic, fear not, you will usually be paddling with the wind & tides (this makes a huge difference). The catamaran will meet the kayaking group downstream with lunch already prepared. After a casual lunch they go to Snipe Point for an hour or so of beach combing. Your next stop... snorkeling, swimming or just hangin out at some beautiful brain coral heads and ledges which are home to a great variety of creatures. After that... (yes there’s more) The Mud Keys for another 1 hour of a different type of guided kayak tour. Once again the catamaran drops you off upstream then heads downstream to await your arrival. They have both single and double kayaks, whichever you prefer. Make no mistake, this is the top kayaking nature excursion in the Keys.
